Education

“I am an ordinary guy. I like movies and I like to read a little bit. I had a dream to be a homeowner, but I couldn’t get anyone to believe that I could make it happen. With the help of the counselor and the education, it came true. I have never been late on a payment in 8 years.”

– Paul Cunningham, age 61

Through his relationship with Blue Ridge Literacy Council, Paul Cunningham connected with Housing Assistance’s housing counseling program in 1999. Over the next 6 years, he worked with a housing counselor to reduce debt and establish savings for a down payment and closing costs so he could eventually build his handicapped accessible home. Paul’s advice to others? “It’s awful hard, but don’t give up.”

Motivated by their desire to become homeowners, approximately 100 Henderson County families seek our housing counseling services annually.

Our pre-purchase counseling services provide one-on-one counseling to develop individualized homeownership plans. Families vary on the level of services needed. Some may need a few as a couple of sessions while others may need several years of counseling, but as long as a family is willing to commit to the process, the counselor will continue to provide support.

Counseling services are offered free of charge for low income individuals or families and are completely private and confidential.  All consultations are one-on-one and based on your own specific circumstances.  Our housing counselor is certified through NeighborWorks Training Institute.
